Brent Beshore - Permanent Equity
The Leadership Philosophy and Life Lessons from "Baby" Buffett
Part 1:
Part 2:
Last year I had the incredible opportunity to delve deep into a conversation with Brent Beshore, the insightful CEO of Permanent Equity, on the podcast formerly known as Mission & Margin.
The discussion was full of gems. Here are just a few I took from part 2 of my conversation.
1. Embrace Vulnerability in Business Conversations
Brent emphasizes the power of vulnerability in business interactions. He believes that showing genuine vulnerability not only helps in building trust but also makes way for more profound, meaningful conversations.
Lesson: Stay curious, admit what you don't know, and approach discussions with a genuine intent to understand. It paves the way for trust and more constructive interactions.
2. Prioritize Long-Term Durability
2023 (and really, the last few years) has posed numerous challenges for many businesses. However, the mantra that Brent emphasizes is survival. It's not just about making it through the tough times but setting oneself up for long-term durability. "We want to be durable in a 100-year flood," says Brent.
Lesson: Don't just react to immediate challenges; always have an eye on the bigger picture — and a longer runway. Building a business that can weather storms will always be more fruitful than one which seeks only short-term gains.
3. The Power of Humility
"God only works through idiots," Brent reminds us. Whether discussing vulnerabilities, acknowledging lack of knowledge, or approaching business decisions, humility is a recurring theme in Brent’s ethos. In the world of business, where ego can often take the front seat, this emphasis on humility stands out.
Lesson: Being humble doesn't equate to weakness; it signifies strength, understanding, and the wisdom to learn and grow.
4. The Value of Resources and Continuous Learning
Permanent Equity isn’t afraid to share learnings and resources. Their website is a treasure trove of resources for budding entrepreneurs and seasoned businesspeople alike. From understanding how to buy your first business to diving deep into the intricacies of debt with 'The High Wire Act', there's a wealth of knowledge up for grabs.
Lesson: Never stop learning. In the digital age, resources are abundant. Invest time in your education, be it through books, podcasts, or online articles.
5. Generosity in Sharing Knowledge
One of the admirable aspects of Brent’s approach is his generosity in sharing his knowledge. Brent believes that while sharing knowledge can benefit his firm, the primary motivation is to help others.
Lesson: Share generously. In the connected world, building communities and networks through shared wisdom can be immensely rewarding, both personally and professionally.
